The wrestling team held their annual Green/Gold Dual in the commons on Dec. 3.
The dual consisted of scrimmages between the JV wrestlers, with most getting paired up with others in their weight class.
“It used to be matches for who got varsity or not, but now it’s mostly for newer guys who have maybe never wrestled before,” assistant coach John Zach said. “It’s a chance for them to get in a match before they wrestle in an actual competition.”
The dual gave some of the new wrestlers a better idea of what a real match would look like, allowing them to wrestle in singlets and with a referee.
“It’s always fun to see all of the new people,” senior Anthony Reese said. “It’s not the most popular sport so it’s exciting to see guys coming out to try it.”
Reese has wrestled for many years, in and outside of high school, giving him plenty of experience. But for others like freshman Henry Ring, wrestling is completely new.
Ring hopes to improve in areas such as strength, leverage and speed for the next football season, and decided wrestling would help with doing so.
“I wanted to try to get better at football, and I knew wrestling would help me,” he said.
Ring enjoys working with and learning from the coaches and upperclassmen, who he says have helped him a lot.
“It’s more of a family instead of a team,” Reese said. “Everyone has each other’s backs, and I know if they need anything I’d be there for them.”
The dual helped prepare the wrestlers for their first tournament, which will be in York on Saturday, Dec. 7.
