Reserve girls soccer keeps undefeated streak alive in shootout win

The girls reserve soccer team played the Bennington Badgers on Friday, Apr. 25. Pius X won 1-0 in a penalty kick shootout.

The Pius X reserve team has an undefeated record.

“It was a hard fought game,” reserve coach Trey Stephens said. “I told the girls, you have to believe in yourself, and we definitely did that in the penalty kicks and came out with the victory.”

Freshman Lily Pickerel was the goalie during the shootout. She tried to stay relaxed under pressure.

“I was definitely anxious but tried to remain as calm and focused as I could,” Pickerel said.

Freshman Bellamy Yant kicked one of the five penalty kicks and made her shot.

“When I was told I was kicking a penalty kick, I felt the excitement and pressure of having to take it,” Yant said. “I have never felt more relieved to finish anything when I realized the ball went in.”

Yant felt that the Badgers were tough competitors and that Pius X had to play their hardest.

“This game was different from the others because of the high intensity,” Yant said. “We all knew that if we made a wrong step or bad pass that it could determine the outcome of the match.”

Stephens feels that the team will improve from this game.

“Every game they’ve gotten better,” Stephens said. “I think this game, a little bit of adversity, a little bit of challenge is really going to help the team get even better.”

The reserve team has one game left on Friday, May 2.
