Pius X has decided to move to Class B for football and opt up to Class A in all other sports for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years.
The NSAA uses this year’s 9th-11th grade enrollment numbers to determine classes for the next two years. Schools are classified based on boy enrollment for football and total enrollment for all other sports.
“We fell below the all students threshold separating Class A from Class B in all other sports besides football,” Athletic Director Greg Lesiak said. “We are hopeful this will just be a short ‘blip’ in our enrollment, and will continue to monitor this.”
Lesiak said the school’s boy enrollment this year fell under the threshold that separates Class A and B in football.
“I think we’ve had more success as a program in Class B so moving back down could help us as a team,” Junior Running Back Matt Bohy said. “So I think it’s a good idea to have more success hopefully.”
While the total enrollment also fell below the Class A cutoff number, all other sports will opt up to Class A for the next two years.
“We are members of the Heartland Athletic Conference, and since this is a Class A conference, in order to remain a member, we must be a Class A school in all sports but football,” Lesiak said.
As it stands, Pius X football will compete in Class B for the 2022 and 2023 seasons and new enrollment figures will be looked at in the fall of 2023.
