Freshmen memorize, recite psalms

Students had to memorize a psalm of their choice and recite it for the class in the freshman theology classes.

Sr. Guadalupe is one of the freshman theology teachers. She was impressed with her students.

“I was really pleasantly surprised with my students,” Guadalupe said. “I felt like I got a good effort from everybody, and some are more able speakers than others, but I was proud that everybody tried and that they were all so supportive of each other.”

The theology classes have done this for two years. Guadalupe advocated for the project after she went to a talk about memorizing poetry.

“When we memorize, we grow our brains no matter what we’re memorizing, and I just thought what good would it be to fill our students with scripture,” Guadalupe said. “We put so much in our brains but if we can get something good and beautiful in there.”

Freshman Huyen Tran is one of Guadalupe’s students. Tran thought it was an easier project.

“Honestly, it wasn’t even that bad, it’s basically just memorizing a poem which I have done before, especially last year in school, our teacher had to have us memorize stuff,” Tran said.

On the contrary, freshman Avery Bartek found memorization the hardest part. Bartek is in Fr. Matthew Kovar’s class.

“I think getting it memorized and presenting it because people kept talking and it was just terrible,” Bartek said.
