Child Developments kicked off their first project to start the year with “The Joy Germ” on Jan. 8.
“This national day first started in World War I when sickness started going around. People decided they wanted to start presiding joy to boost morale,” Child Development teacher Amy Shonka said.
The project started with salt paintings. Students were asked to draw something that brought them joy.
“The whole idea of the salt the color will spread I want you to think about spreading joy,” Shonka said. “It is a demonstration of how we should spread joy.”
While some drew ice cream and others drew suns they all had the common thing in joy. The next day they were asked to pick paint colors and color their drawing with a partner.
“I thought it was fun, I really liked how ‘Joy’ stood for ‘Jesus, others, you,’” senior Ellie McGuire said.
Students in the class received sticker hearts to give to staff and students around the building to spread the Joy Germ.
“The project had a really good message and I’m glad we get to spread this message around Pius,” senior Lucy Ring said.
