The Pius X Academic Decathlon competed in regionals on Saturday, Jan. 18. The competition consisted of tests, a super quiz, and finally awards and it took place at Pius X.
Junior Regina Jordan competed as a varsity student in the competition. She won two bronze, one silver and six gold medals.
Jordan scored twice as high as she did in the last scrimmage.
“I did twice as good as I did last time because I studied so hard,” Jordan said.
Senior Jonah Meduna completed as an honors student. He won three bronze, two silver and one gold medal. Meduna studied in various ways.
“I paid attention to the pieces especially in art class, learning all about them, reading and kind of learning how they connect to the topic this year,” Meduna said.
Meduna believes he needs to improve.
“I think I did ok, I think I have a lot of room for improvement definitely before state,” Meduna said.” I need to study more but I’m satisfied with how I did.”
Mike Katalenich is the head coach of the team. He thinks the team did great and they have a good shot at going to nationals.
“We did great, we won by 4,000 points in our division,” Katalenich said.
The team will work hard to win state and earn the right to go to nationals.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us to beat them but four more weeks of a hard push to state and we are in sights to go to nationals.”
Katalenich’s favorite part was announcing.
“I loved getting to play game show announcer and so getting to announce for the Super Quiz, while not the most exciting game show in the world, I enjoyed thoroughly,” Katalenich said.
The state competition is Feb. 14-15 with the champion advancing to nationals in Des Moines, Iowa.
