The Pius X Mock Trial team celebrated their successful season with a small awards ceremony that took place in the Pius X library after school on Tuesday, May 11.
Team sponsor Erin Willis organized the event and presented awards to each member of the team and a gift for the seniors. This season was the first season a Pius X Mock Trial team had ever qualified for state.
Senior Keagan Callahan was especially proud of this accomplishment. He has been a part of Mock Trial for three seasons.
“I joined Mock Trial because I thought it would be a good way to experience law and to see if it was something I wanted to pursue in the future,” Callahan said. “As a team, we review the case that is assigned for this year and then the lawyers create openings, closings, examinations and then witnesses learn their parts.”
Senior Sophi Throener Rodriguez joined Mock Trial her sophomore year because her mom is an attorney.
“I thought that was a super interesting career path,” Throener Rodriguez said. “Eventually I decided that it was something that I wanted to explore to do with my life as well.”
She was also most proud of being on the first Pius X team to qualify for state along with being the only girl on the varsity team as an attorney. She recommends joining Mock Trial to everyone.
“Even if you’re not wanting to become an attorney, it is an amazing experience, especially if you like acting,” Throener Rodriguez said.
Mock Trial team members loved their season recap and being awarded for all their hard work throughout the season.
“In the past we haven’t been able to have a ceremony,” Throener Rodriguez said. “But Mrs. Willis has made Mock Trial really fun and interactive, and I definitely think it has helped bond us as a team.”
