Class with the CAO

Having an administrator who also teaches an elective class is not something that happens every day, but that is exactly what Tom Korta’s role is this year.

Korta is in his first year as Chief Administrative Officer after moving from the principal role at the beginning of this year.

He is teaching Computer Applications, a class that gives students some of their required life skills credits.

“I am teaching the class for the first semester, because there was no suitable applicant,” Korta said.

Whilst being the CAO and a teacher can be challenging, Korta thinks he is managing it quite well.

“It’s lots of work and I have to plan a lot,” Korta said. ”There is not as much grading as planning. I have to move meetings around.”

This is a new experience for Korta, but he is enjoying it.

“I love teaching the kids, I have 14 great kids and watching them grow and learn was really a fun experience,” Korta said.

Multiple students were excited at the opportunity to talk about their experiences with Korta.

“Yeah, this class is pretty fun and there’s lots of jokes,” sophomore Thuy Nguyen said.

Other students enjoy the low stress environment of the class.

“This class is laid back and you still get the info you will need in life while going slow,” junior Matthew Vu said.

Many students had fond memories of the class.

“My favorite memories are when I cracked a Caesar cipher with Excel and watching Mr. Korta go off about how cool Excel is,” junior Aden Miller said.

Junior Nick McGahan said he liked how unique and fun Korta’s teaching style was.
