Band premieres custom songs written by director

The excitement of performing on the football field, the feel of crisp fall air and the sound of music drifting out of instruments. Marching band season is in full swing!

This year, the Pius X marching band is performing a set of songs written by past assistant band director John Kosch.

“One thing that I think is kind of cool is just the music itself,” band director Jared Wilhelm said. “This is the first time we have done this type of custom written music for us. That’s kind of new and fun and different.”

The director and band members share in the excitement of having custom songs.

Senior drum major Jamie Tran said, “I think that it is amazing because not many schools get to have their music written for them specifically. We’re just so lucky to be able to have Mr. Kosch write them for us!”

The titles of the songs are “The Call of Goliath,” “David’s Prayer” and “Battle of the Valley.”

“The whole show is meant to tell the story of David and Goliath,” Wilhelm said.

The marching band members are also eager to perform these songs.

“I am really looking forward to the second song, ‘David’s Prayer,’” junior clarinet player Chloe Pomajzl said. “I am really looking forward to marching that one because I think there’s really cool visuals, and that it’s really pretty.”

Marching band’s first competition was Sept. 21 at Pius X.

“I’m looking forward to our competitions because we always have a bus ride there with all of our friends and we all get a lot closer, and I just want to see how we’re going to do at the competitions because I know our hard work will pay off,” Tran said.

Marching band’s last competition is the State Festival on Oct. 26.
