Usually reserved for special events, the sound of music in the halls between classes has become more common as of late.
“We play music the Friday of homecoming week, and any Friday we have a pep rally,” student council vice president Charlie Budell said. “And starting this year, we’re doing it the first Friday of every month.”
The music has received a primarily positive reaction from students, with many saying it brightens their day and improves their mood.
“I feel like it puts me in a better mood and just makes the day better,” Junior Serenity Winfrey said. “I think we should do it more often because it makes everyone more happy, more hyped for the day.”
The songs are chosen both by the student council and the general student body, with the requests being submitted through the student council’s Instagram account (@piusxstuco).
“I ask a multitude of friends and everyone from the student body, and the Stu Co Instagram sends out polls to see what music people want to hear,” Budell said.
Freshman Gabe Lian is new to the tradition and responded positively to the music played on homecoming Friday.
“I did not know that the person playing those songs would have such an amazing taste in music,” Lian said.
So far, a diverse selection of songs has been played, and everyone has their favorites, with Winfrey’s being “Happy” by Pharell Williams and Lian’s being both “Pink + White” by Frank Ocean and “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
However, Budell’s favorite still hasn’t been played, so keep your ears open for “Kung-Fu Fighting” by Carl Douglas.
