The first week’s results of the library’s annual March Book Madness came in on Thursday, March 7, creating excitement in the book lovers’ community.
This year’s theme is YA Series Tour, created by senior Clairvaux Villa with help from some friends.
“Because of all the Taylor Swift Tours this year, we thought it would be fun to do something with that theme, so we found YA series where the last book of the series ends in the year of that Taylor Swift era,” Villa explained.
This year’s theme has been popular because the books are easily recognizable, and many students have read or at least heard of most of them.
“I really like it because almost everybody has read these books when they were in junior high or middle school,” senior Amelia Fijolek said.
In this week’s matchups, Percy Jackson won against Twilight, The Maze Runner took out Artemis Fowl, Divergent won over Delirium, Harry Potter beat The Selection, Throne of Glass took out Darkest Minds in a landslide, Legend edged out Scythe, The Hunger Games won against Shadow and Bone and Eragon defeated Mistborn.
“This week, first of all, Artemis Fowl did not win,” Villa said sarcastically. “That was a disappointment. The Leigh Bardugo series, which includes Six of Crows, also did not win, so I am disappointed in the entire student body, and people should vote for better books.”
Students’ passions for these books have been clear as they proudly take a stance on which books they do and do not want to win.
“My thing is that I didn’t like Legend,” senior Thuy Nguyen said. “You don’t accuse a guy of murdering your brother, then go ‘Oh my gosh! You’re so cute!’ And then they’re like ‘let’s run away and be in love!’ That’s so out of pocket!”
There are still three weeks left in the competition, and all students are encouraged to come down to the library and vote for their favorite series.
“Your opinion should be heard!” Villa said. “We want to know what kind of books you like and at the end of the day, it’s just a fun way to remember all the YA books you read back in 6th grade.”
