The positive impact of involvement in extracurricular activities outside the school day has been cited in many studies. A 2016 Sacred Heart University article identified a range of positive outcomes related to involvement in school activities, generally, these included increased school engagement and connectedness, improved time management skills, increased peer relationships, and benefits from delayed gratification. These outcomes positively influence the student and also have a positive impact on the school as students who are engaged and connected to their school create a positive school culture.
A wide variety of activity options are available to Pius students including sports teams, performing arts programs, after-school clubs, and faith-based events. The variety of activities provides the opportunity to meet the interests of any student looking to get involved.
Students wanting to become more involved and grow in their faith can do so through the events and activities organized by the Pius Campus Ministry. Attending Restore on the first Wednesday of the month or joining a Discipleship group are two ways students can meet, and get to know, other students while enriching their faith.
Joining one of the over 50 clubs offered at Pius is another way students can share a passion or interest. The variety of clubs offered at Pius ranges from the puzzle club to the ACT study group, some clubs such as the knitting club offer a relaxing activity while others, including Super Smash Bros and the swing dance club, have a more active setting. There are even clubs for students who enjoy the outdoors through the archery club and trap club. Students looking to join a club will likely find one that meets their interests and if not, they have the option to start a new club.
There are several opportunities for students to become involved in the performing arts. Each year the Pius Players put on a fall play, one-act play, and spring musical. The instrumental music department offers three bands as well as an orchestra club. Vocal music offers several choirs as well as Spectrum and Prism show choir groups.
There is likely a level of familiarity with the traditional sports teams Pius offers which encompass 16 different sports including bowling. These teams compete as members of the NSAA and HAC Conference traditionally representing Pius at a high level. The cheer and dance teams perform at games throughout the year as well as at the state dance and cheer competition.
Because of the positive impact extracurricular activities have on students, becoming involved can be a tremendous benefit. However, like all things, good balance is key. Finding one or two activities to be active in is usually a good start as students learn to manage their time and academic commitments.
I encourage parents to talk to their students about how they can become involved in activities at Pius and I encourage students to take a look at all the options available and consider becoming involved.
