Having been raised in a rural community with no parochial school available, Shirley has always been very proud of the education offered by Pius X High School. Grandchildren, Elizabeth (2000) and Wallace (2002) Dilley, Caroline (2004), Caitlin (2006), Carly (2010), and Claire (2013) Ficke enjoyed the Pius experience, especially through the music programs. This was so rewarding to them. Faith, accompanied by music, has been the family anchor, and her reason for funding this scholarship.

After graduating from the University of Northern Colorado, teaching in the public schools and then opening a private and group piano studio, music has been an important part of her life. Shirley and Robert were married in 1956, and were blessed with a daughter and three sons, and are members of the Cathedral of the Risen Christ Parish. Shirley has been active in stewardship, Altar Society, Light of the World, Catholic Daughters, perpetual adoration, and the Lincoln Music Teachers Association.
