Feast Day of St. Pius X – August 21
Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto was born on June 2, 1835 in Riese, Italy, to Giovanni and Margherita Sarto. He was the oldest of the eight children in the Sarto family, a family of faith that had little worldly wealth. He studied at the parish school in Riese. The pastor there noticed his gifted intellect and arranged for him to receive a scholarship to attend a secondary school not far from Riese. When Giuseppe expressed his desire to study for the priesthood, his pastor and parents encouraged him and another scholarship was arranged for his seminary studies in Padua.
Father Sarto was ordained a priest in 1858, and later became the Bishop of Mantua (1884). Pope Leo XIII recognized the fruits of Bishop Sarto’s apostolic zeal, elevated him to Cardinal and appointed him Patriarch of Venice in 1893. Cardinal Sarto was elected to be the Pope in 1903, and chose the name Pius X. His Holiness took seriously his motto: “to restore all things in Christ” (Eph. 1:10). Pope Pius X battled the errors of modernism, reformed Church music, and started the codification of Canon Law. His ardent love for the Blessed Sacrament was manifested in his encouragement of the frequent reception of Holy Communion and his decree allowing children to receive their first Communion at the age of reason. Saint Pius X is frequently called the “Pope of the Eucharist.”
On August 20, 1914, Pope Pius X passed into eternal life. His tomb soon became a place of pilgrimage. Pius X was beatified on Jun 3, 1951 and canonized a Saint on May 29, 1954. His feast day is celebrated on August 21.

Feast Day Prayers
Pope of the Eucharist, Saint Pius X, you sought "to restore all things in Christ." Obtain for me a true love of Jesus so that I may live only for Him. Help me to acquire a lively fervor and a sincere will to strive for sanctity of life, and that I may avail myself of the riches of the Holy Eucharist in sacrifice and sacrament. Amen.
Heavenly Father, you gave Saint Pius X a desire to love and serve those living in poverty. We pray today for all people without jobs, living on the streets, and without access to food, water, or shelter. Help us to imitate your charity toward those in great need of being acknowledged and attended to. May we bring hope and love to the lost, orphaned, abandoned, and destitute. Amen.
Saint Pius X, you had a beautiful devotion to Our Lady of Confidence during your lifetime. Help each of us to be confident that God loves us, wants a personal relationship with us, and provides for all of our needs. Pray for us to rely on our Heavenly Father in the midst of all trials, disappointments, and sufferings that we face. Amen.
St. Pius X, pray for us. Our Lady of Confidence, pray for us.
Jesus, you instilled within Saint Pius X a love for education and made him a great teacher. He saw the importance of schooling and desired to bring religious instruction to everyone. Jesus, help us to remember that our education is a gift and to seek to do our best this school year. Bless our students, faculty, staff, and benefactors. Amen.
Saint Pius X, you attended to the sick during the cholera plague of northern Italy and would visit the sick during your time as pope. Pray for the people in our Pius X family who are sick and suffering. May they have refuge in Christ and may He heal them mind, body, and soul. Amen.
Jesus, you raised Saint Pius X in a poor and humble family. We pray for all of the families of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni to be centered on you, Jesus. Help us to have an appreciation for each other’s personalities, gifts, and weaknesses. Give us the grace to be unified and protect us from all evils. Amen.
Heavenly Father, you gave St. Pius X a love for the Eucharist and great reverence during Holy Mass. May we recognize that your Body and Blood is the source of life and the greatest gift. Help us to receive the Eucharist with purity, faith, repentance, and love. We pray for all the priests and religious that work at Pius X. Amen.
