Walker participated in football, basketball, and baseball before graduated from Pius X in 1969. He played quarterback and excelled in baseball and still holds the highest single season scoring average in Pius X basketball history. Walker enrolled at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on a baseball scholarship and was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973.
Walker met his wife Gail while playing in the Cardinals organization and eventually moved back to Lincoln. He spent 31 years working as a Production Planner for two printing companies and another 10 years working for Kawasaki. Gary and Gail have been married for 44-years and have two children: Derek (’99) of Los Angeles and Emily (’04) of Lincoln, and one grandson.
