Thad Aerts ’93

What is your current title and organization? Describe what you do.

I’m the managing partner at Boiler Brewing Company in Lincoln, Neb. We’re a small batch craft brewery that makes beer, cider, mead, and seltzer. I run the business, which means I’m on the non-beer making side of the fence.

What is it you love about your work?

I love the creative and design elements of my job. And the autonomy. I’ve never had a 9-5 job, and by the grace of God, hope that I never do.

What hobbies or other activities do you most enjoy?

I’m lucky to spend the vast majority of my professional time immersed in one of my passions. Aside from that, my two sons and I are big into motocross and riding dirt bikes. I’m also a huge music fan and enjoy high-end audio. And I also love skateboarding, snowboarding, and bicycles.

What memories stand out to you about your time at Pius X (classes, activities, teachers, etc.)?

Oh geez- I don’t think there is enough space here to cover this one. I loved my high school experience and I think about it often. Our senior year in particular was so much fun- both at and away from school. I had a friend at that time, who has since passed, that lived in an apartment that provided a space away from school for us to gather to study and engage in other innocent, contemplative, low key fun. If I only had a time machine…..

How does your experience at Pius X impact you today?

Both Pius, and my catholic education that preceded it, informed who I am as a person today, the choices my wife, Amy (who I met at Pius) and I make, and how we have raised our family. All of our kids have gone to or will go to Pius- which is a testament to the positive experience and education that Amy and I received.

Share a little about your family.

Amy (Nelson, class of ’92) and I have been married for 25 years and have five children. Ella is 24 and lives in Long Island, NY where she attends Long Island University and is studying to be a veterinarian. She has blessed Amy and I with our first grandchild, Sloane. Maddie is 22 and is currently a senior at UNL where she is doing her student teaching for her degree in Elementary Education. Maddie is also an assistant manager at Boiler Brewing Company. Ava is 18 and a freshman at UNL studying Physical Therapy. She also works at Snyder Physical Therapy and is the bingo boss at Boiler Brewing Company on Monday nights. George is 16 and a junior at Pius. He is currently considering studying power sports mechanics upon graduation and currently works at Amigos. Henry is 11 and in the 6th grade at St Theresa’s. Henry is a great student who loves playing the trumpet, riding his dirt bike, playing chess (repeatedly calling check mate on me in less than a minute), playing video games, writing music, skateboarding, playing basketball, football, baseball, etc. Henry is a busy kid. Una and Molly are both 2. Una is a black lab and Molly is a lab mix. Neither have any formal education but are both pretty smart. They spend their days lounging about the house, not doing much of anything to contribute to the family other than to look cute and to beg for treats- especially Una.
