The Catholic faith is the core of why Pius exists as a school. Helping our Pius students achieve a faith-filled life is part of our mission as a school and the reason most parents send their student to Pius. This school year there has been a desire among our students to develop a deeper faith life, a deeper relationship with God, and a desire to share that with other students. This tide of faith has possibly been fostered by the Pius Campus Ministry Team, our Pius Chaplains, or our parents who are the first teachers of the faith. Wherever the current spark was started, our students have embraced this desire to grow closer to God and develop meaning within that relationship.
With Lent recently beginning, we are given the opportunity to further reflect on where we are on our faith journey. There are many opportunities this Lent for Pius students to continue the growth in their faith. One of these opportunities is freshmen encounter groups. All freshmen participate in an Encounter Group on Tuesdays during their Theology class. These groups are led by an adult mentor in single-gender small groups. Encounter groups give students the opportunity to discuss and share their faith with other students.
After the experience of Encounter Groups during their freshmen year, students can join a Discipleship Group. Where Encounter Groups are part of Theology class and take place during the school day, a student can join a Discipleship Group if they choose to do so. Led by an adult mentor, these groups meet outside the school day. Discipleship Groups offer the opportunity for students to build on the experience of Encounter Groups. Because of friendships that likely exist among Discipleship Group members, there is an opportunity for group members to really grow in their faith.
Another opportunity students have to grow in their faith is Restore. This event takes place on the first Wednesday of each month. During the event, a student gives a testimonial on their faith journey. This is followed by Eucharistic adoration, the opportunity for confession, and prayer teams. The beauty of prayer during the Eucharistic adoration can be a very powerful experience for students.
Pius also offers the opportunity for daily Mass. Each school day morning Mass is offered in the Pius chapel at 7:20. Many students attend Mass often, which is a great way to start the school day.
The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. This is true of our students who are at many points along their faith journey. This Lent it is my hope that their journey continues to progress toward God. Lent is a great opportunity for parents to help students reflect on their faith life and take a step closer to God. Even a small step can set us on our journey.
