The Pius X boys basketball team’s season ended at State with a defeat at the hands of Bellevue West.
“I feel like we gave it all we had,” senior Tommy Dworak said. “Last game of our career for the seniors, we had a lot of seniors on the team, it was just fun to play in Pinnacle Bank, it’s where you dream of playing your whole life.”
Bellevue West gained the lead early in the first quarter, and the period ended with them leading 14-8.
The second quarter followed the same trend, with Bellevue West further expanding the lead.
Senior Jack Hastreiter was able to close the gap slightly with a three pointer around the end of the quarter. This, however, didn’t do much, as Bellevue West went on to score another 15 points, making the score 40-17 by the end of the half.
Quarter three saw Bellevue West continuing to score with Pius X unable to keep up.
Hastreiter was able to make two back-to-back three-pointers, but they could not stop Bellevue West from nearly doubling the number of points Pius X had.
This made the score 48-26 by the end of the third quarter.
Bellevue West did slow down in the fourth quarter. Pius X was able to get a little closer, partially thanks to a three-pointer from senior Brady Christiansen, making the score 50-36.
“We started off slow, but we got it together and played better in the second half,” sophomore Treyson Anderson said.
However, Pius X was unable to catch Bellevue West as they continued expanding the gap. After a Thunderbolt layup before the buzzer, the game ended in a score of 60-44.
This loss marks the final game in a Pius X uniform for the team’s seniors.
“Thank you [seniors] for everything you’ve done the last four years and all the work you’ve put in to take our team where it went,” Dworak said.
