The Pius X Literature Club had their final meeting on Saturday, April 24. The meeting took place at the Harbor Coffeehouse and they discussed the book If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio.
“‘If We Were Villains’ just had so many plot twists and there was so much packed into it, it was insane,” co-president and junior Cadence Watson said.
As a result of COVID-19 many of the meetings had to be over Zoom.
“It was hard because you aren’t meeting face to face, so you aren’t able to get as good of a conversation going about the books, but I think we overcame it,” junior Jillian Soden said.
For the last couple meetings, the club was able to meet in person.
“I loved that we were able to get back to coffee shops and meet up there and that was a lot of fun to get drinks and talk,” Soden said.
Usually, the club does a book exchange in December, but since that month’s meeting was over Zoom the gift exchange took place at the end of this meeting.
At the first meeting in September, club members take turns listing off books that they want to read during the year and then afterwards all the members vote on their top 8 choices. The co-presidents then count up the votes and send out the list of book choices.
This year there was a wide range of genres from classics like “Phantom of the Opera” by Gaston Leroux to romance like “Love from A to Z” by S.K. Ali to fantasy like “Girl, Serpent, Thorn” by Melissa Bashardoust and even a graphic novel called “Wonderland”.
“‘Girl, Serpent, Thorn’ was a take on a fairy tale that I had never heard of before,” Watson said. “It was interesting, and she [Bashardoust] brought in all the fantasy components that made it believable in novel form rather then what you normally think for fairy tale.”
