Spanish II students used what they have been recently learning to do a cooking project.
“We are working with our preterit, our vocab and our direct objects and putting it all together in a real-life application,” Spanish teacher Stephanie Werner said.
Students could work individually or pair up. Each student or group picked one of the recipes the Spanish II teachers provided.
“It is really fun to see everybody take on different projects and get excited about what they are cooking,” Werner said.
Students had to translate the ingredients and instructions from English to Spanish using Word Reference, an online multilingual dictionary and language learning resource.
“Translating the recipe was really interesting because I got to see all the different words and how they are pronounced,” sophomore Josie McCabe said.
Most of the words in the recipe were not ones the students already knew in Spanish, so they had to learn how to translate them correctly.
“It is good to know extra words about food in Spanish and it is good to know how to translate stuff accurately,” sophomore Gregory Henkenius said.
Students were required to make enough samples of their food to share with their class on Mar. 31.
“It was fun to make it, I’ve never made something like this before,” sophomore Abby Tlamka said. “It was fun to try new stuff.”
After making the food, the students had to make PowerPoints to present to their teacher. The PowerPoints included pictures of the students making the food, however there were no words on the PowerPoints, so the students had to memorize what they were going to say when they described the pictures.
Werner said, “It is good for them to realize how they can take their Spanish out into other context and other activities.”
