New club offers different option to practice Spanish

Students have another opportunity to improve their Spanish skills through a new club.

“Amigos Globales started with a senior, Jesus Yanez, and his aunt in Mexico,” Hayes said. “His aunt emailed to collaborate for a pen pal club, so the students can write in Spanish and English, and thanks to that, both sides can improve.”

Of course, Mexico is not exactly next to Lincoln.

“At first, we thought we were going to mail the letters, but when we researched it, it would take seven to 21 days to arrive,” Hayes said. “There is also a chance of it getting lost, so we usually scan and email them. We have physical copies right now because Jesus’s dad went to Mexico this past weekend and brought them down and back.”

There is a high opinion of the club, and it has just started.

“I think it is a great club, especially for people who want to learn more Spanish, either for their daily lives or anything,” senior Jonah Meduna said. “I think I am a good Spanish speaker, but this helps me apply my knowledge better.”

It does not matter to the club if you have heritage or not for speaking, all are welcome.

“Most languages you can pick up and learn, it does not matter who you are, it is a good skill to learn for the future,” Meduna said. “All I must hope for is that they can read my handwriting.”

Amigos Globales meets on the first and third Thursday of each month in room 1215.
