A member of Cathedral of the Risen Christ, Paul W. Hyland attended Blessed Sacrament School, and was a World War II Army veteran. Paul was a graduate of UNL, and a co-owner of Hyland Brothers Lumber Company. He served as past President of Northeast Rotary Club and Country Club of Lincoln, and was a member of Lancaster County Draft Board during the Korean War.
Jean H. Hyland was born in Urbana, IL to N. Bruce and Miriam Hazen in 1923. An avid golfer, Jean won five state match play championships as well as nineteen city championships and three Nebraska state senior titles. She was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1992. In addition, she loved card games and outdoor activities such as birdwatching and fishing and shared her passion for these things by teaching her nieces and nephews and her young neighbor. Their nephews and nieces, John Hyland ’68 and his wife Nancy (Cook) Hyland ’69, and Dan Hyland ’72 and his wife JoAnn (Andreas) Hyland ’72, are graduates of Pius X.
Paul and Jean Hyland named Pius X Foundation as a remainder beneficiary of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) they established in 1996. Jean and Paul were married for 60 years when Paul passed away at age 88, on October 13, 2011. The trust provided lifetime income to the couple for many years, and continued to provide support to Jean until she passed away at age 97 on April 7, 2020.
The funds remaining in their trust benefited Pius X Foundation (and a variety of other charitable organizations), allowing Paul and Jean to create a lasting impact as members of the St. Pius X Legacy Society with a gift of more than $35,000 that will forever support our
students.
