Arthur “Artie” Aksamit ’74 was a member of the Pius X High School 1973 state championship Football team and the 1974 state championship Basketball team. Artie was a 1973 All-City selection and was All-State Running Back as a junior. He was severely injured during his first game as a senior, spending three months in a cast with extensive rehab. Doctors released him to play basketball in January 1974. He resumed his starting center position in January for the remaining 19 games of the season. Artie scored the winning basket in the State Final on a tip-in with three seconds remaining to help give Pius X their first ever Basketball State Championship in 1974. After graduating from Pius X in 1974, Artie went on to coach one year of girls Varsity Basketball at Norfolk Catholic High School, and 14 years of Junior High Basketball at St. Pius X in Aurora, Colorado. Artie and his wife of 46 years, Theresa, live in Aurora, CO. Their three children and five grandchildren all live in Colorado as well.
