The Physical Education program is designed to reflect the philosophy of Pius X High School and the physical education profession as expressed by these purposes:
 
  1. Enhance his/her physical fitness and further develop basic movement skills.
  2. To become a knowledgeable participant and/or spectator for the wholesome use of leisure time.
  3. Participate in class, intramural, and interscholastic physical activities.
  4. Gain an understanding of the desirable qualities of citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, and decision-making through organized physical education activities.

Key Purposes in Physical Education

In order to better maintain a physically healthy body for significant living in today’s society, the student will further enhance his/her physical fitness (strength, cardiac-respiratory endurance, motor efficiencies,coordination, and flexibility) and further develop basic movement skills.

To become a knowledgeable participant and/or spectator for the wholesome use of leisure time. The student will learn and understand the related rules and guidelines, skills, strategy, and safety factors for a variety of team sports and individual activities.

In order to contribute to one’s individual potential for emotional maturity and stability so that they may achieve satisfaction in life, a student will be provided with opportunities to participate in class, intramural,and interscholastic physical activities.

To further develop one’s social attributes in their relationship with others as a contributing member of society, the student will have the opportunities to gain an understanding of the desirable qualities of citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, and decision-making through organized physical education activities.

Girls Physical Education & Health

Grades: 9

Length: Year

In this course students learn, and participate in, exercises to develop cardiovascular and muscular endurance, agility and coordination. Students are also introduced to rules, regulations, skills, strategies and safety factors for a variety of team and individual sports. Good health and safety practices are stressed. The health curriculum is delivered over the course of one quarter. In the health portion, the primary emphasis will be on providing students with the necessary knowledge to develop positive health habits, and process the information needed to assume responsibility for their own health. We will cover the basic systems of the body, nutrition, exercise, drug and alcohol abuse, communicable and non-communicable diseases, stress and anxiety.

Boys Physical Education & Health

Grades: 9

Length: Year

In this course students learn, and participate in, exercises to develop cardiovascular and muscular endurance, agility and coordination. Students are also introduced to rules, regulations, skills, strategies and safety factors for a variety of team and individual sports. Good health and safety practices are stressed. Strength And Performance

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Length: Semester

Weight Training skills and fitness are developed through stretching, running and lifting. Emphasis is placed on lifting to enhance athletic abilities and participation. The class meets 5 days per week. Only one physical education class may be taken in a semester.

Boys Fitness, Recreation, And Sport

Grades: 10, 11, 12

Length: Semester

In this course, students learn the value and importance of conditioning and fitness, developed through cardiovascular activities such as jogging, interval training, and jumping rope, along with other aerobic training methods. Strength training is achieved by doing body weight and core activity as well as resistance bands, medicine balls, and free-weights. Recreational, team, and individual sports are used to reinforce conditioning and fitness along with continuing the skill development of working with others and achieving individual and group success. Only one physical education class may be taken in a semester.

Lifetime Sports And Introduction To Officiating

Grades: 11, 12

Length: Semester

In this course, students will be given the opportunity to participate in lifetime activities such as tennis, pickleball, badminton, Frisbee golf, etc. In addition, an emphasis will be placed on learning the rules and regulations of certain sports such as flag football, volleyball, basketball, softball, baseball, etc., with a component of officiating live competitions. This course will NOT meet the Physical Education elective requirement. Only one physical education class may be taken in a semester.
