Q&A with Michael Helman '15
Michael Helman was an All-state baseball player at Pius X High School, where we graduated from in 2015. After not receiving any Division I scholarship offers after high school, Helman seized a junior college opportunity at Hutchinson Community College, and later earned a scholarship for his junior year at Texas A&M. This past June, Helman was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of the Major League Baseball Draft.
First baseball memory as a youngster
My earliest baseball memory was playing catch with my grandpa and dad at my grandparents’ farm in Brainard, NE.
Favorite MLB team growing up
My favorite baseball team growing up was the New York Mets. I loved Mike Piazza and had a David Wright jersey.
Biggest influencers on the journey
There have been so many influences on my journey. The biggest ones have to be my parents, select baseball coaches, high school coaches, and Juco coaches and my A&M coaches. I’m eternally grateful for each and every one of them and they have impacted my life in such a way that I could never repay.
What impact, if any, has your experience at Pius X had on you since your graduation?
After graduating from Pius X and beginning some real world experiences, I realized that there were many people that had helped me along my journey and I know that Pius X served as one of the influences that helped sculpt me into the type of person I am today. The intangibles of character, work ethic, and infusing my faith into my pursuits surrounded me in both my home life and my school.
